About Character Counter
Check that your text fits a limit: a social media post, a meta description, a text message, a form field or an application question. The count updates as you type or paste.
Characters are counted the way people see them, so an emoji or an accented letter counts once. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
Type or paste your text to see how many words, characters, sentences and paragraphs it has, with estimated reading and speaking times. The numbers update as you type.
Words are counted the way word processors count them, and languages written without spaces, such as Chinese, Japanese and Thai, are split into words using your browser's built-in dictionaries. Your text never leaves your device.
How to use Character Counter
- 1Type or paste your text into the box.
- 2Watch the counts update as you write.
- 3Clear the box to start again.
Frequently asked questions
Is my text saved or uploaded?
No. It's counted in your browser and isn't saved anywhere: close the tab and it's gone.
How is reading time calculated?
At 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for adults. Speaking time uses 140 words per minute, a typical pace for talks and presentations.
How are words counted?
Like a word processor: anything between spaces that contains a letter or number is a word, so “well-known” and a web address each count once. Lone punctuation such as a dash isn't counted.
Does it work for Chinese, Japanese or Thai?
Yes. These languages don't put spaces between words, so the counter splits them using dictionaries built into your browser.
Are emoji and accented letters counted correctly?
Yes. Characters are counted as you see them, so an emoji or a letter with an accent counts as one character.
